Sorry to interrupt, but can I add one thing? → one point → Anyway, you were saying…。
- ADD:one relevant point
- PASS:floor
We were thinking of going around six because Maya finishes work at five thirty and then—
Cambridge Learner’s Dictionaryのinterruptには、Sorry to interrupt... や Can I just interrupt you?
| Signal | Useful when | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Sorry to interrupt, but... | 相手が話している途中にbriefly入る | Sorry to interrupt, but the booking is at one. |
| Excuse me, can I add something? | attentionを取ってshort pointを入れる | Excuse me, can I add something about the time? |
| Can I just add one thing? | conversationにbrief contributionを足す | Can I just add one thing? We need to leave by five. |
British CouncilのB1 dialogue Meeting friendsにも、ongoing conversationへ Sorry to interrupt, but...
Sorry to interrupt...
ADD:one point
Bad expansion:
Sorry to interrupt, but the booking is at one, and also I checked the route, and maybe we should take the train, and I was also thinking about dessert...
Bounded version:
Sorry to interrupt, but the booking is at one, not twelve thirty.
| What you want to say | What must be heard now? | ADD |
|---|---|---|
| booking time + route + menu | booking time | The booking is at one. |
| name spelling + background story | name correction | Just one thing—my surname is Tanaka, not Tanaka-Smith. |
| meeting topic + three opinions | clarifying question | Sorry—are we talking about Friday or Monday? |
- Go on.
- Sorry—what were you saying?
- Anyway, you were saying we should leave at six?
- That was all. Please, go ahead.
Go on. はcasualでshort。What were you saying? Please, go ahead.
Example:
Sorry to interrupt, but the booking is at one, not twelve thirty. Anyway, you were saying we should leave around twelve?
Full move lab:correct one detail and return
The booking’s at twelve thirty.
Model 1
Sorry to interrupt, but can I add one thing? The confirmation says one o’clock, not twelve thirty. Anyway, you were saying we should leave around twelve?
Model 2 — shorter
Sorry to interrupt—the booking is at one. Go on.
Original practice example
Sorry to interrupt, but the meeting starts at three, not two.
SIGNAL + one factual correction。
team conversationでtime/detailをbriefly correctする場面。
Original practice example
Excuse me, can I add one thing? We need to leave by five.
Original practice example
Sorry—are we talking about Friday or Monday? Go on.
person/place/reference clarificationへ変えてください。
Original practice example
Anyway, you were saying the later train might be easier?
REJOIN。
| Original | 分類 | Listener interpretation | Intent | Natural alternative | Context note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Excuse me to interrupt. | 丁寧に会話へ入る | Sorry to interrupt, but... / Excuse me, can I add something? | excuse meとsorry to interruptをseparate patternsとして使うほうがclearです。 |
| Sorry for interrupt, but... | wrong | apologyは伝わりますが、after for のverb formが違います。 | interruptしたことを詫びる | Sorry for interrupting, but... / Sorry to interrupt, but... |
| Can I interrupt? | brief pointを入れたい | Can I just add one thing? |
| Anyway, I have another question. | grammatically valid with a different meaning | anywayでconversationをorganiseしつつ、新しいquestionへ進んでいるように聞こえます。 | interrupt前のtopicへ戻す | Anyway, you were saying the booking is for Friday? |
Final drill:one-breath interruption
