英語で手順を説明する練習｜相手が動ける順番で話す
説明すると相手が途中で止まる人へ。GOAL→SETUP→ACT→CHECK→HANDOFFで、必要な物と場所を先に出し、相手がそのまま動ける順番で英語を組み立てる練習をします。
手順説明は、知っている情報を全部言うことではありません。listenerが次に何をすればいいか迷わない順番へ並べます。
Press Submit. First choose the file. It’s on the left.。grammarより大きいproblemはorderです。listenerは一度止まって説明をreverseしないと動けません。手順は、自分が思い出す順ではなく、相手が動く順。
- GOAL：完成状態を先に言う
- SETUP：必要な物・場所・starting stateを先に置く
- ACT：one executable actionずつ進める
- CHECK：次へ進むためのconditionだけ確認する
- HANDOFF：done / next stateを渡す
GOAL：最初に「何を完成させるか」を言う
listenerがgoalを知らないままstepsだけ聞くと、どのdetailが大事か判断できません。

長いintroductionはいりません。done-stateを一文で見せます。
SETUP：必要な物と場所は、使う前に出す
British CouncilのInstructions for a colleagueでは、何をいつするかを明確にし、物の場所も伝えることが推奨されています。
Backwards:
Click it. The blue button is at the bottom right.
Executable:
At the bottom right, find the blue Save button. Click it.
“it”を使う前にobjectを紹介します。listenerに宝探しをさせない、くらいの気持ちでOKです。
ACT：one main actionずつ渡す
Cambridge GrammarのImperative clausesでは、imperativeはbase formを使い、instructionsなどで人に何かをしてもらうために使われます。一方でdirectなformなので、contextによってpolitenessを調整します。

trainingではone main action per stepにすると、listenerのnext actionがclearになります。これはtechnical-writingの絶対ruleではなく、speaking practiceのscaffoldです。
First / Next / Then / After that は順番を見せる。でも順番そのものは直してくれない
British CouncilのGiving instructionsでは、First、Then、Next、After that がstep sequenceに使われています。CambridgeのNextでも、instructionsでimmediately following stepを示すlinkとして使われます。

でも First, press Submit. Next, choose the file. と言えば、markerは正しくてもprocessはwrong orderです。
CHECK：次のstepを壊すconditionだけ確認する
CHECKは毎stepに入れる必要はありません。次へ進む前にstate確認が必要なところだけ使います。
- Make sure the file name appears next to the button.
- Check that the printer is selected.
- Before you continue, make sure the setting is turned on.
CambridgeのConjunctions: timeでは、before と after がevent orderを示せると説明されています。dependencyを明示したいときに便利です。
HANDOFF：最後に「done」と「next」を渡す
British Councilのinstruction materialには、listener側の What do I do next? や Is there anything else? のような確認もあります。speaker側は、最後にそれを先回りできます。
- When you see the confirmation message, you’re done.
- That’s it. Now you can close the window.
- After that, just wait for the email.

Locationとobjectを先に紹介し、そのあとactionを渡します。
appやwebsiteのbutton位置を説明する場面。
「右下にある青いSaveボタンを見つけて、クリックしてください。」
top left / menu / iconなどに入れ替えてください。

Physical setupをactionより前に置きます。
coffee machineなどlow-risk everyday deviceを説明する場面。
「まずカップを機械の下に置き、そのあと大きなボタンを押してください。」
setup/actionの順番を逆にしたbad versionも作って比較してください。

printingやdevice selectionの場面。

Final drill：Pronoun delay
自分のinstructionから最初の it / this / that を探します。objectがまだ紹介されていなければ、最初だけexact nounへ変えます。
手順は、自分が思い出す順ではなく、相手が動く順。 first/nextを増やすより、prerequisiteを前へ、objectをpronounより前へ、checkをfailureより前へ。そうするとlistenerは説明を翻訳するだけでなく、そのまま動けます。
