如何用追問讓英文對話更有內容?

英文對話不是一直換新問題。用 Pick → Probe → Open → Build,從對方上一個 answer 抓 detail,追問 clarification、detail、reason、feeling 或 next step,讓聊天自然變得更有內容。

最自然的追問,通常不是想一個全新的問題,而是從對方剛剛的 answer 抓一個 handle,再沿著那條線問下去。

對方說:The interview was harder than I expected, especially the case study at the end. 你下一句卻問:Do you like movies?。Grammar 沒壞,conversation 壞了。追問不是換新題,而是抓住上一個 answer 還沒展開的東西。

Pick → Probe → Open → Build

  • Pick:抓一個 noun、event、feeling、decision 或 consequence。
  • Probe:選 clarify、detail、reason/feeling、consequence/next。
  • Open:想 expand 才給較大的 answer space;只要 verify 就用 closed confirmation。
  • Build:下一題繼續從新 answer 裡拿 material。

一句話記住:follow the answer, not your checklist.

為什麼 connected follow-up 比「更多 questions」更重要?

一項刊登於 Journal of Personality and Social Psychology 的研究,在 getting-acquainted conversations 與 speed-dating 資料裡發現,較多 question-asking、尤其 follow-up questions,和較高的 perceived responsiveness 與 liking 有關。這不代表「問越多越討喜」;研究真正提醒我們的是:追問能顯示你有在回應對方剛說的內容。 查看研究

所以這篇不教 question quota。Conversation 不是 questionnaire with better pronunciation。

Pick:上一個 answer 裡,通常已經藏著下一題

先找一個 handle。比如對方說:

The interview was harder than I expected, especially the case study at the end.

你有兩個很明顯的 handles:harder than I expectedthe case study at the end

Original practice example

What made the interview harder than you expected?

直接 recycle 對方的 wording。這種 echo 讓 next question 和上一個 answer 的 connection 一眼可見。

對方用了有 meaning 的 comparison、evaluation 或 surprising detail 時。

聽 partner 一句 answer,先圈出一個 noun 或 phrase,再把它放進下一個 question。

Probe 1:不清楚,就 Clarify;不要假裝你已經懂

如果 handle 本身很 vague,先問 meaning:

Original practice example

What do you mean by “intense” here?

Clarification request 的 job 是讓對方把 vague wording 說清楚,不是要他重講整段。

對方說 weirdintensecomplicated 等,而你不知道具體指什麼。

Partner 故意用一個 vague adjective;你只能問那個 word 的 meaning。

另一種是已有 candidate interpretation:When you say “intense,” do you mean the questions were difficult? 這比較接近 confirmation。L2 interaction research 也會把 clarification request 和 confirmation check 分開。查看 interaction study

Probe 2:有一個具體點,就 Zoom into detail

Original practice example

What was the case study like?

這不是換 topic;它把鏡頭拉近到對方剛提到的 case study。

story、trip、meeting、interview、class、problem 裡出現一個未展開的 detail 時。

聽一個 answer,找最具體的 noun,問一個只關於那個 noun 的 follow-up。

也可以問 sequence:What happened after that?,或 decision process:How did you end up choosing that?

Probe 3/4:想知道 why、feeling、consequence 或 next step

Original practice example

What made you decide to accept it?

這個 question 追的是 decision reason,而不是再問一個 unrelated fact。

對方提到選擇、改變、拒絕、接受、搬家、轉職或其他 decision 時。

Partner 說一個 decision;你在 reason、feeling、consequence、next step 四個方向中只選一個。

  • Reason:What made you decide that?
  • Feeling:How did you feel about that?
  • Consequence:What happened because of that?
  • Next:So what are you going to do next?

Closed 還是 open?先看你的 job,不要站隊

Did you like it? 沒問題。如果你只想確認 yes/no,它很有效率。

如果你真正想知道內容,What did you like about it? 給對方更大的 answer space。

  • Verify:So you accepted the offer, right?
  • Expand:What made you decide to accept it?

Open question 不是道德上更高級。Question shape 要服務 interaction job。

有時只問一句就夠;有時先 respond,再問會更自然

如果內容帶 emotion,你可以先簡短回應,再追問:

That sounds stressful. What happened next?

這裡第一句讓對方知道你有接到 emotional meaning,第二句才 Pull 下一段。但別把每個 follow-up 都做成固定兩句 formula。

Build:下一題,再從新 answer 長出來

Conversation-analysis research 有一個很適合 learner 的提醒:真正的 interactional initiative 往往出現在 speaker 離開原本 script、開始根據前一個 response 調整 follow-up 時。對 novice ESL learner 的 longitudinal analysis 就觀察到 prepared survey list 之外的 post-expansion / follow-up 發展。查看 ESL interaction study

A: The case study was about launching a product in a new market.
B: What was the hardest part?
A: Deciding how much to spend on advertising.
B: What made that decision difficult?

第二個 follow-up 用了最新 answer 裡的 material。這就是 Build。

追問不是 interrogation:不要讓 conversation 變成問卷

  • 不要把 unrelated questions 一題一題堆上去。
  • 對方說到 emotional point 時,可以先 respond,再問。
  • 有時你也可以 share 一小段自己的 experience,而不是永遠只當 interviewer。
  • Private/sensitive detail 不是因為文法問得出來就一定適合問。
  • 如果對方開始給很短、關閉式 answers,別硬把同一條線挖到底。

研究裡 follow-up questions 和 responsiveness 的關係,不等於「最多 questions 的人最會聊天」。重點是你有沒有聽到對方剛剛給你的 material。查看研究範圍說明

追問太 broad?直接把 target 縮小

你問:Why was it difficult? 對方不確定你指哪裡。可以立刻 repair:

I mean, what part was most difficult?

不用重啟整段 conversation。只要把真正想問的 handle 指清楚。

Same Answer, Four Follow-up Jobs

Base answer:The interview was harder than I expected, especially the case study at the end, but I still accepted the offer.

Round A — Clarify

When you say it was harder than you expected, what do you mean?

Random:Do you like working from home?

Round B — Detail

What was the case study like? / What happened when you got to that part?

Round C — Reason / feeling

What made you decide to accept it? / How did you feel after you accepted it?

Round D — Consequence / next

So what are you going to do next?

Closed vs open

Verify: So you accepted it, right?

Expand: What made you decide to accept it?

“Why you chose that?” 為什麼不對?

學習者說法: Why you chose that?

分類:標準 standalone direct question 裡不正確;past simple 通常需要 auxiliary did 放在 subject 前。

聽者會理解:大多能猜到你在問選擇原因。

更自然: Why did you choose that? / What made you choose that?

Context note:embedded clause 可以用 I wonder why you chose that.

一個小練習:One-handle drill

Partner 每次回答後,你先在腦中重複一個 meaningful noun / phrase。下一題一定要用那個 handle。新 answer 出來後,再換新的 handle。

Conversation 是 thread,不是 questionnaire

讓英文對話更有內容,不需要準備一百個「有深度的問題」。更實用的是:follow the answer, not your checklist.

Pick 一個 handle;Probe 它的 meaning、detail、reason、feeling 或 consequence;Open 只有在你真的想聽更多時;然後 Build 下一題從新 answer 出發。

上一個 answer,通常已經把下一題的一半交給你了。
