英文對話被打斷時,怎麼回應最自然?
英文講到一半有人開口,不一定是在搶話。先判斷 incoming talk 的功能,再用 Continue / Adapt / Yield / Resume,決定繼續、吸收修正、讓出 floor 或自然接回原 point。
被打斷時,先別反應「兩個人同時說話」這件事本身。先判斷 incoming talk 在做什麼,再選 Continue、Adapt、Yield 或 Resume。
你正在說:The second option is better because...,對方同時說 Yeah. 你立刻停了。其實他可能只是表示「我在聽」。Overlap 出現,不等於對方一定在搶你的 turn。
Continue / Adapt / Yield / Resume
Original practice example
Yeah—exactly. The second option is better because it gives us more flexibility.
Original practice example
Right—Friday, not Thursday. So the deadline is Friday, and that gives us one more day.
對方的 correction 改變 factual detail。Speaker 先 acknowledge/revise,再繼續 current action,而不是假裝 correction 沒發生。
date、number、name、requirement、missing word 或 clarification 會改變後續 meaning 時。
Partner 在你的 sentence 中途改正一個重要 factual item;你必須先修正 wording,再繼續。
High-stakes boundary:如果 incoming correction 涉及會改變 action 的 date、number、instruction、requirement 或 safety-like detail,先 pause、clarify/confirm,再決定 continue 或 revise。不要為了守 floor 把正確資訊壓過去。
Yield:讓出 floor,不代表你的 point 永久消失
有時 incoming turn 確實成為更 relevant 的 next action:對方有一個 necessary question、urgent correction、或你單純決定讓他先完成。這時最自然的 response 可能就是短短一句:
- Go ahead.
- Sure—go ahead.
- Sorry, you go first.
Original practice example
Sure—go ahead.
Yield 是 local decision:現在先讓對方拿 floor。它不等於「我原本的 point 從此取消」。
兩人同時起講、對方提出 relevant question、或你選擇先聽對方完成時。
兩人故意同時 start;其中一人只用一句 yield phrase,另一人完成後再決定是否回原 point。
如果兩個人同時停下來,不需要一篇 apology essay。Go ahead.、You were saying...,甚至重新 start 都夠。
Multimodal conversation research 也顯示,人在 overlap 中 drop out 不一定代表原 action 被放棄;speaker 可能等待新的 slot,再 resume。查看 overlap withdrawal/resumption study。
Resume:side sequence 結束後,原 point 還有用,就把線接回來
你讓對方問完一個 clarification,或 conversation 暫時處理另一件事,不代表你只能把原 point 丟掉。English everyday-interaction research 觀察到 recurrent resumption practices:speaker 可以用 discourse marker,加上部分 recycled material,再接回下一個 component。查看 English resumption study。
Original practice example
Anyway, as I was saying, the second option gives us more flexibility.
Anyway 在這裡真的有 return/shift job:intervening sequence 已結束,speaker 回到 suspended point。
clarification、brief side question、temporary topic diversion 結束後,原 point 仍然 relevant。
Partner 中途插一個 short side question;回答完後,用 return marker + 原 point 的一小段 recycled wording 接回來。
其他自然 options:
- So, going back to what I was saying...
- Right, where was I?
- 直接 recycle interrupted phrase,再繼續。
Anyway 不是万能 filler。如果你沒有真的 return / shift,它只是在句首多放一個 word。
真的需要 finish?用 bounded floor defense,不用升級成音量比賽
如果對方 repeatedly takes the floor,而你有一個 current point 必須先完成,可以 direct 地守一下 floor,但把範圍講小:
- Just a second—let me finish this point.
- Let me finish this thought, then I want to hear that.
- Can I just finish this sentence?
這些不是每次有人說 yeah 都要掏出來的防身工具。它們適合「我 current action 還沒完成,而且真的需要先完成」的 moment。
如果對方的 incoming correction 改變事實、暴露 misunderstanding 或帶來 necessary instruction, floor defense 就不是優先目標;先處理新的 relevant action。
Interruption 真的改變 task/topic 時,不一定要硬 Resume
每個 “yeah” 都回 “Don’t interrupt me”
Brief acknowledgment 很可能只是 support。先別把 backchannel 當 takeover。
一有人說話就自動放棄原 point
Yield 可以只是 temporary。Intervening sequence 結束後,原 point 仍 relevant 就 Resume。
Resume 時只丟一個無關的 “anyway”
Return marker 後面要真的接回 suspended thread,最好 recycle 一個原本 noun/phrase。
Correction 已改變 meaning,還是硬把舊版本說完
這不是流暢,是忽略新資訊。先 Adapt。
Accidental overlap 後一直道歉
短短 Go ahead / Sorry, you go first 已經能修大多數小撞車。
Same Turn, Four Incoming Moves:同一句話被「插進來」,反應卻完全不同
Base ongoing turn:I think we should choose the second option because it gives us more flexibility, and...
Incoming A — “Yeah.” / “Mm-hm.”
Choice:Continue。
Yeah—exactly. It gives us more flexibility, and we can change it later if we need to.
Incoming token 只是 brief support;current action 還沒完成。
Incoming B — “Friday, actually.”
Context:你剛把 deadline 說成 Thursday。
Choice:Adapt。
Right—Friday, not Thursday. So the deadline is Friday, and that gives us one more day.
Correction 改變 factual meaning,先吸收它。
Incoming C — “Actually, can I ask something about the cost?”
Choice:Yield,如果這個 question 現在是 relevant next action。
Sure—go ahead.
Question 處理完後,你仍然可以決定是否 Resume original point。
Incoming D — side clarification 已結束
Choice:Resume,如果 original point 還 relevant。
Anyway, as I was saying, the second option gives us more flexibility.
也可以不用 anyway,直接 recycle interrupted wording。
“Let me finish my speaking” 聽得懂,但不像自然 floor defense
學習者說法: Let me finish my speaking.
分類:意思可理解,但在普通 conversational floor defense 裡 non-idiomatic / unusual。
聽者會理解:你想把自己的 current speech/turn 說完。
更自然: Let me finish. / Let me finish this point. / Can I just finish this sentence? / Let me finish this thought, then I want to hear that.
Context note:finish speaking 完全自然,例如 Let me finish speaking.;比較不自然的是把 speaking 當名詞 object 說 finish my speaking。
一個小練習:Interruption replay
Partner 說一個短 story。另一個人只 inject 一次,四種 cue 任選一種:
- acknowledgment;
- correction;
- relevant question;
- clear floor claim。
Speaker 不要先背句子。先在腦中判斷 incoming function,再只做一個 Continue / Adapt / Yield / Resume move。
Don’t fight every collision
有人在你講話時開口,不代表你立刻失去 turn,也不代表你一定要 defend。先診斷:Continue / Adapt / Yield / Resume。
Supportive backchannel 可以 Continue;meaning-changing correction 要 Adapt;relevant next action 可以 Yield;temporary diversion 結束後,原 point 還有用就 Resume。
被打斷真正需要的 skill,不是永遠守住 floor,而是 知道什麼時候不用守、什麼時候該讓、什麼時候值得回來。
